Welcome to the first blog post of 2018 and Happy New Year to all our customers and followers!
We are excited to start the year with some great positive news from an important charity that we support. Surfers Against Sewage (SAS for short) campaign tirelessly for cleaner oceans and tidier, safer beaches both here in the UK at around the globe. There latest campaign is a drive towards a deposit return system for the UK.
It works by incentivising the collection of plastic bottles around the country. Customers can return their ’empties’ back to the point of purchase and get paid for each bottle.
Following the introduction on the 5p carrier bag tax a couple of years ago there has been a 40% decrease in plastic bags on the nations beaches. These are encouraging figures.
16 million plastic bottles end up in the environment every day in the UK and a successful deposit return scheme would mean a large percentage of these are collected and reused.
The ‘Message In A Bottle’ petition reached over 250,000 signature (the UK’s largest petition) and was presented direct to 10 Downing Street with encouraging response. The campaign follows Scotland’s recent announcement that they will develop their own deposit return scheme to combat the crisis of single use plastic pollution in the country.
We are proud to support such an amazing and important campaign and look forward to seeing what 2018 will mean for our future.
